 "The Daily 5"

The Daily Five is a way of structuring our reading block so that every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks.  It was developed by two sisters (and teachers) Gail Boushey and Joan Moser.  The research based tasks are ones that will have the biggest impact on student reading and writing achievement.  Students are given explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read and write independently.  During this time the teacher focuses on intense instruction for individuals and/or small groups of students.  Students are given some freedom and choice of which activities they would like to do after learning, modeling, and practicing the expected behaviors for each literacy task.  The Daily 5 choices are:

Read to Self
Read to Someone
Listen to Reading
Word Work
Work on Writing

I began this program several years ago and my students love it!  I will be implementing the Daily 5 again this year and look forward to seeing your children make great strides in reading and writing in the days ahead.
